Designated Speech and Language Provision

Our school has specialist staff for children with speech and language disorders.

At Bilton Infant School our aim is to enable all the children to reach their full potential by giving them a full curriculum, a variety of opportunities to learn and by providing them with the support they need to help them learn.

What is it for and who is it for?

Bilton Infant School is one of seven mainstream schools that have an agreement with the Local Authority to provide a maximum of 9 places within the school for pupils with Specific Language Disorders. Pupils offered a place will have severe speech difficulties and / or language skills which are less developed than most of their other skills. This is what makes the language disorder specific.

Our school has a room, known as the Speech and Language Provision, very like a small classroom where pupils can work.

How does it work?

Pupils belong to a mainstream class and are fully involved in all school activities.

 - Staffing includes specialist teachers, assistants and Speech and Language Therapists who work closely with the mainstream staff to address pupil's individual needs.

 - Support is offered within the whole class and within the Speech and Language Resource Base in a small group or individually. The nature of specialist support depends on your child's strengths and weaknesses.

 - Specialist resources are available to support your child's access to the whole school curriculum.

 - Each pupil will have a programme tailored to his / her specific needs known as an I.E.P. Termly meetings are held involving you
and your child and staff to review progress and to agree new targets.

 - Following the school's aims and objectives you are encouraged to be fully involved in your child's progress. Additional support is
offered using a Home / School Link Book and Parent Support Group.

 - The Local Authority will provide free transport from your home to and from the school.
